Gino's Italian Restaurant Review, Tampa, Florida

Review of Gino's Italian Restaurant and Bar

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of reaquainting myself with a nice Italian restaurant located in north Tampa.

Here is the address

Gino's Restaurant and Bar
10006 N. Armenia Avenue
Tampa, FL 33612
(813) 933-1089

I came here one time about 10 years ago after one of the famous full-moon skates in Tampa with a bunch of friends of mine.  And soon as I walked in I remembered that I had the Mussels Fra Diavolo as a late night appetizer.  It's amazing what you can remember once you jog your memory a bit.

And I remembered it being good, so this time I tried the Seafood Fra Diavolo as a main course.  It is mussels, shrimp and scallops served over linguine with a nice and spicy red sauce.  And there is plenty of sauce that is left over that can be mopped up with the bread.

The entrees will come with some garlic bread that is warm and oozing with butter and garlic.  They even brought out more once we devoured our original basket.

The salad comes with a nice homemade, vinigarette sauce that was a little on the sweet and tangy side, but good.

The red '"fra diavolo" sauce was perfectly spicy, not too overpowering, but it had a nice kick.  Fra Diavolo means "By the Devil" in Italian to signify spicy dishes.  It was exactly as I remembered it from about 10 years ago, which is amazing that it was so consistent.  My only complaint is that the linguine should have been a little more "Al Dente" which is my personal preference (and how most Italians are taught to eat their pasta growing up), and the scallops could have been a little better quality, but other than that, it was great.

Picture of the Seafood Fra Diavolo - the restaurant review continues after the pic

Beer and Wine

They have a nice beer and wine selction, of course, I had a nice glass of Chianti with my meal which goes perfectly with the fra diavolo sauce, although it is not typically paired with any type of seafood.

Service at Gino's Restaurant

The service was very good, you can tell that they are well-trained and attentive.  The front staff was even very accomodating as we had to change the number in our party at the last minute.

Prices

Here is what they have on the menu:

House specialties ($12 - $20 range)
They have meatloaf which I want to try next time, along with Eggplant Parmesan and Steak Marsala, etc.

Pastas ($10 - $16 range)
Baked Ziti, Ravioli, Gnocchi, etc.

Seafood ($16 - $22 range)
Seafood Pasta, Grouper Picata, Shrimp Scampi, etc.

Chicken / Veal  ($16 - $18 range)
Picata, Marsala, Parmigiana, etc.

They also have Burgers, Sanwiches and Wraps.

It is a nice Italian restaurant / bar / good place for a date, or to go with a group of friends, or go after work.  You can even sit at the bar.  It has a nice bar-look to the place with wooden decor.  They even had the Rays game on TV.

They are open for lunch and dinner.

Dessert - Cannoli!

For dessert, I had the cannoli, which was awesome, the mixture of ricotta and sugar was perfect, the cream was nice and airy and the shell was nice and crispy, and it was beautifully presented.  This was on par with cannolis that I've had in New York and Italy.

I definitely have to come back to this place, and not have it be another 10 years.

[Picture of the Cannoli - as you can see it was delicious!]

Body Movement & Isolations

This class teaches both men and women of all levels how to be more aware of their body movement and how to apply this movement in their dancing. Students will learn how to isolate different parts of their body and how to combine these movements into a combination done to music. The class will begin with an in depth body movement warm-up consisting of head, shoulder, rib cage, and hip isolations, followed by a detailed explanation of how to technically execute head whips, body rolls, hip rolls, and combinations of these movements. Jerome then provides specific examples of how and when to apply these movements and isolations in shines and partnering and provides the accurate timing and counts for each movement.

3:45-4:45pm
Spinning Technique

This class offers men and women the foundation to execute spins accurately and consistently with grace and style. This workshop is excellent for anyone that wants to improve their technique and balance while spinning and dancing.  The class begins with a detailed explanation of how to find your “center” and then progresses to a description of the concept of “spotting” for both stationary and traveling turns.  Additionally, Jerome places emphasis on the lead and follow of spinning, which consists of finger technique, arm placement, and tension levels.  Students will develop a greater awareness of their body and learn the intricacies of spinning, controlling momentum, and stopping.

5:00-6:00pm
Mambo Musicality

This class teaches all levels of dancers how to read the rhythmical patterns and structure of a song and how to create movement that best suits the music.  This is an excellent class for anyone that wants to be more creative and musical in their social dancing and on stage.

Italian classes in Tampa went well

Just completed a 4-week Italian course in Tampa where I taught a few people to speak Italian. I really enjoyed teaching it, especially when I get kudos like the one below. And it's a great feeling to raise some money for a great organization like F.I.C.S. I'll be definitely teaching it again in the near future.

I received an email below about an interesting event taking place this upcoming weekend. If it were not for my Italian classes that I am teaching, I would be very interested in attending the event. Here is the email I received from the winery:

Hello Larry,

I am contacting you from Rosa Fiorelli Vineyard and Winery in Bradenton, FL (www.fiorelliwinery.com)

I'm not sure how you choose which events to announce to your group, but we have a wine and food pairing event coming up that I thought would be great for your group.

The event will take place on Sat. March 31 from 4-8pm at our winery and people can sign up on our website. There will be a four course meal paired with 5 different wines.

Feel free to contact me for any other information/details.

A cool little widget from daily mile

One of my favorite new sites is DailyMile.com, it is a social media type site, where you can track your workouts, like running, jogging, skating, walking, gym-workouts, etc.

Here is a cool little widget, while I'll put on the right side of this site underneath the facebook image which shows the number of miles I logged in the dailymile site for this year. I actually started around February 1.

I also like this one below, but it won't fit in the sidebar of my site, so I'll just put it on this post for now

More reviews on my Italian class

Here is an image of more reviews from my Italian class in Tampa that I started this past weekend.  I'll have 3 more sessions with this group.

I will be having more in the future.  If you are interested in finding when these occur, just join my meetup group.

Empowering our youth gathering on March 24th, Cephas' Ybor City

If you've been a regular reader of my blog, you know that I am involved with the Florida Institute for Community Studies.

A colleague of mine just passed along some information about another group that is involved in helping the youth of Tampa Bay.

They are having a gathering on March 24th.

The gist of this gathering is centered around community empowerment through ecological education and awareness that is geared toward our youths. Collaboration with each other will inspire the environment.

Italian lessons in Tampa to benefit FICS

Hey everyone,

I am offering some Italian lessons in Tampa through my meetup group.  The proceeds will benefit FICS, who I write about often on this blog.  It is a great organization helping the youth of Tampa Bay.  Here is the email I received earlier today from them:

Florida Institute for Community Studies email

FICS was able to send two of our Prodigy youth to Tallahassee during Children's Week 2012!  We are very proud to report back that they did an awesome job and even "ran into" Governor Rick Scott, scoring a
photo moment with him!

Here's what A.G., age 9, wrote:

I like FICS because I get to do capoeira with Mr. DA and I get to learn new stuff to do like I learned how to do a handstand and cartwheel which I never knew.  Mr. Freddy is funny and I learned how to make new beats and how to do a lot of memorizing the beats.  The tutors help me do my homework like Mr. Rick, he helped me with my division, fractions and decimals.  Mr. Rick explains the really hard math to me because mathi is my worst subject in class....When I first came here I didn't know anybody but now I know everyone.  I like it hhere because Ms. Ameerah is pretty and she is nice and I love Fridays because you can watch a movie or play games, that's why I love FICS.

Fiesta Day, Ybor City, 2012

Fiesta Day Ybor City
Saturday, Feb 25 10:00a - 6PM
at Ybor City, Tampa, FL

Fiesta Day (a traditional street festival) is a tribute to the Cuban, Italian, German, Jewish, African and Spanish immigrants that came to Ybor City back in the late 1800's. It's a great way to celebrate the Latin cusine, culture, heritage, etc. that shapes the current culture of Tampa Bay.

As the Cuban cigar factories were booming, these immigrants settled in the Ybor City district of Tampa. Ybor City Day, as it was known, originally began as a day of rest for the cigar workers of the district.

They expect about 15,000 people to attend the event.

Cost: Free!

History of the Cuban Sandwich, Tampa vs. Miami

If you live in Tampa, you know that the Cuban Sandwich is a very popular menu item in many Tampa restaurants and is an item that is uniquely Tampa.   Here is a little history of the Cuban Sandwich.

I was just reading an article in the Florida Trend Magazine that interviewed Richard Gonzmart, the president of the Columbia Restaurant chain.

According to Gonzmart, the Cuban Sandwich is not really a Cuban food item.  It is really a Tampa sandwich.  In Miami, they also do a Cuban Sandwich, but they do it a little different:  they leave out the salami. The sandwich is really a combination of different influences that formed the Tampa community back in the 1800's.

Italian influence - Salami
Spanish influence - Ham
Cuban influence - Pork
German influence - Mustard and Pickles

And he even mentioned that in the 1940's, it was actually called a "Mixed Sandwich".

An Oppulent Tableau of Essence, Book Signing, Mangroves Bistro, Tampa

Below is some information on an upcoming book signing and art show.  It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Sharon Hays earlier this week.  Sharon was a great friend to me my mother, and we will miss her dearly.  She was a very kind-hearted person, full of energy and life.  Her enthusiasm was always apparent in everything she tried to accomplish.  As a smart entrepreneur, she built a successful business in Wyoming. She recently moved to Florida, where she lived next door to my mother.   After I moved my mother to Tampa from Sarasota, she was like a blessing, in that it gave my mother a "new found friend" in a strange city.  For that, we are forever grateful.

Sharon recently started writing books, and tomorrow is a book signing she had planned prior to her passing.  The book signing and art show will continue in her spirit.

The book, the latest in her collection is called An Opulent Tableau of Essence, is a nice collection of art and poetry (much of her own poetry), and is a nice coffee table type book.

You can really appreciate the depth of her creativity, as the other books are 2 mystery novels, and she even has written children's books.  And now she has added book this to her resume.

Below is information taken from her site regarding the book signing:

Tampa author, Sharon Hays presents the premier of her book,

"An Opulent Tableau of Essence"

Book signing and art show at:

Mangroves Bistro
208 S Howard Ave, Tampa
Date: Sunday February 12
Time: 6 to 10 PM
Public is invited
Free Admission

A light selection of hors d'oeuvres will be provided
A raffle will be held to benefit Hillsborough Arts, Inc.
Hays will also donate 12% of sales from “An Opulent Tableau of Essence”

Meet and greet the author, artists and poets. Bay area artists that contributed to the book will be highlighted, showing their incredible, original works of art, and poetry readings will highlight the poets. Music will be provided by DJ Teresa, a popular local dj, publisher and producer of Roja Records. She is event coordinator of the affair.

The lovely coffee-table book is a blend of artists from across the globe with poetry to accent each works. It is truly a journey of the spirit from each and every artist, and poet.

Review of Aventura Salsa / Bachata Dance Cruise 2011

Review of Aventura Salsa and Bachata Dance Cruise - 2011

Being an avid salsa dancer, and a lover of travel, I've been wanting to do a salsa cruise for the longest time.  I first became aware of the Aventura dance group, out of Ft. Lauderdale Florida about 2 years ago.  By the time I found out about them, it was a little late to plan to go on the cruise for 2009.  I was disappointed I couldn't make it then.  I tried to go on the 2010 cruise, but wasn't able to get a good roommate (although they can set you up with one if you don't have one), and the timing just wasn't right..

About Aventura Dance Studio Ft. Lauderdale

They are a dance studio out of Ft. Lauderdale run by Moshe Rosier and this was their (I think) 4th annual salsa - bachata cruise.  It is the largest salsa / bachata dance cruise in the world, and attracted about 500 people.  The Royal Caribbean Cruise ship Liberty of the Seas holds 3,600 passengers on the boat.  I believe there are about 1,300 staff as well.  I believe one day, if they combine efforts with other salsa schools, they may be able to get the whole boat to themselves.  They had people from all over the US attend the cruise, and even people from other countries (i.e. Canada, Switzerland, Poland, Mexico, etc).

In November 2010, I went on my first cruise, Carnival Inspiration out of Tampa, and went to Cozumel.  A great experience, although it wasn't a salsa cruise.

Finally, I found a good roommate for the 2011 Aventura Salsa / Bachata dance cruise, and booked voyage back in September.  The agency that handled the booking was Payless Travel Agency, I think they are out of Miami.  They are the ones that handled it for Aventura Dance Group.  They did a decent job, I guess.  However, we found out that we were all supposed to get a complimentary bottle of wine, but that didn't happen for everybody.  I believe the travel agency normally gives those type of gifts for a group this large.  Anyways, one of the complaints I heard was that the agency was not that responsive and that next year Aventura Dance Studio will deal directly with the cruise line.

Salsa Congress at sea (on a cruise)

Basically, the salsa cruise is a salsa congress at sea (i.e. on a cruise ship).  Although, with a salsa congress, you can purchase a day-pass, a 2-day pass, 3-day pass, etc.  With the salsa cruise, you purchase one pass for the whole time you are on the boat, or no pass at all.  If you don't purchase the dance pass, then in essence, you are just going on a regular cruise.  You will not have access to the performances, to the dance workshops, and the mini-excursion Mexican beach - dance party (view video) that took place at the famous Half Senor Frogs in Cozumel.

The workshops that they scheduled were fantastic.  And the good thing about it, is they had 3 going on at the same time, so it was like a salsa workshop buffet that you can pick and choose.  They had a total of 44 workshops.

Schedule of Salsa Cruise Events, Performances

Albert Torres, the originator of the L.A. Salsa congress was the emcee of all the performances.  He was very entertaining, and pretty funny.  Although, sometimes maybe he tried to force it, overall, he was a great emcee.  He had a "History of Salsa" workshop on the cruise, that was 1.5 hour presentation that I am sorry I missed.  I'm sure it would have been very interesting and fascinating.  They scheduled it right after the excursion in Cozumel at 6PM, which was tough for many people to attend.  Not a good choice for the schedule.  They did reschedule it at 4PM for Sunday, but still wasn't able to make that one.

The performances were fantastic as well.  There were many good ones that stand-out, and some were done by first-time performers.

List of Salsa and Bachata Performers on dance cruise

One of my biggest complaints with the cruise is that the performances would start around 8PM and then end around 11PM.  The dining on a the Royal Caribbean was fantastic.  Therefore, after you have a great meal, and sit down for a few hours to watch the salsa performances, I was having trouble keeping awake during certain portions as you go sit in the plush seats of the RC Sphynx and Ice skating Rink.  I guess that might be my age catching up with me :-)

Then after the performances, the dancing would start.  Usually at the Sphynx Lounge, and then after that would close around 12:30 to 1AM, the dancing would continue poolside.

So my beef is that I wish the dancing started a little earlier.  And to have more social dancing perhaps in the afternoon hours.  Luckily, there was a Latin band that was playing on the ship, so some people went to Boleros Lounge to dance to live Latin Music.

Overall it was a great experience, especially if you like to dance salsa music or bachata.  They even played a little merengue, and had some cha-cha workshops, and even a type of music called Pachanga, a latin-style dance that originated in Cuba in the late 50's, and now is popular in Columbia.  It is like a Cha-Cha with a stronger downbeat.  They also had workshops for salsa on one and salsa on two (salsa on 1) (salsa on 2).

I would definitely do it again next year,  I hope they pick another destination besides Cozumel, just because I would want to see a new destination, although I would still go again if it was Cozumel.

If you were on the cruise, and want to say hello, just add me on facebook!

Larry

Victor Manuelle plays "Si Tu Me Besas" in Tampa, live at the Ritz

One of my favorite Victor Manuelle songs is "Si Tu Me Besas", and that is saying a lot considering all the great salsa music he has produced over the years. I read on Wiki that he is tied with Marc Anthony for the number of number-one Latin Hits. So he is in pretty good company.

Rózame la vida
Y no tengas miedo de morder
La fruta prohibida
Cierra las salidas
Voy a darte un beso que juro no se te olvida

Below is the video:
