Traditional Italian 7-fish Christmas Eve Dinner

Pictured below are some images from a 7-fish Christmas Eve Italian dinner, or the famous "festa dei sette pesci." This is moreso a tradition in central and southern Italy. The significance of seven is not really known for certain but there are a couple of theories. One theory is that seven is supposed to represent each day of the week. Another theory is that the number "7" relates to the number of Sacraments in the Roman Catholic Church. In any event, it is still a beautiful Christmas Eve tradition for Italians and many Italian-Americans.

Jose Cuervo Christmas Cookies

Jose Cuervo Christmas Cookies

1 cup of water
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup or brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 cup nuts
2 cups of dried fruit
1 bottle Jose Cuervo Tequila

Sample the Cuervo to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the Cuervo again, to be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink.

Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl.

Add one peastoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point
it's best to make sure the Cuervo is still ok, try another cup just in case.

Turn off the mixerer thingy.

Break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.

Pick the frigging fruit off the floor.

Mix on the turner.

If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaters just pry it loose with a drewscriver.

Sample the Cuervo to check for tonsisticity.

Next, sift two cups of salt, or something. Who geeves a sheet. Check the Jose Cuervo. Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts.

Add one table.

Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find.

Greash the oven.

Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall
over.

Don't forget to beat off the turner.

Finally, throw the bowl through the window, finish the Cose Juervo and make sure to put the stove in the wishdasher..

Review of Gio's Italian restaurant

Gio's was great, we had bruschetta and eggplant involtini for the appetizer. The tomato sauce on the eggplant was fresh tomato-like. I had the spaghetti alla puttanesca, which was very tasty and al dente, and had a nice kick to it. The salad was great, the olive oil was extra virgin, and they had a nice wine selection, although I like my Chianti. The cannoli was really good, covered with chocolate, and I tried some of the cheesecake (not really Italian, but it was good). Great place to go eat.

By the way, puttanesca sauce is a southern Italian dish, made with capers, anchovies, olives, tomatoes, garlic, sometimes red pepper. Puttanesca comes from the Italian word "puttana" which means whore. Legend has it that a Neopolitan madame would cook that sauce, and the aroma would draw in prospective clients into the "restaurant" or her brothel. That is your Italian lesson for the day :-)

Email from Juan, workshops later this month

Hello everyone,

As many of you already know I have recently relocated to Chicago Illinois, and I am no longer living in the Tampa bay area. I truly feel blessed and privilege to have met, taught, worked, and developed a friendship with many of you. I also have enjoyed watching you grow and develop as members of our Salsa community. I truly feel like a proud daddy every time I see you dance, teach, or being an advocate in our Tampa Salsa scene.

Even though I no longer teach in Tampa on a regular basis, I am planning to drop-in from time to time and schedule some workshops as well as some privates. Besides catching up with many of you this will also give me an excuse to come and visit!!! That being said, Saturday October 30th will be my first visit back since moving to Chicago, so I scheduled some workshops (Salsa, Bachata, and Cha-Cha) in which I hope you are
able to attend. I will also be available for private lessons... If you would like to schedule a private class with me please send me an email or give me a call.

The schedule for the workshops are as follows:

1:00pm - 2:00pm           Salsa
2:00pm - 3:00pm           Cha-Cha
3:00pm - 4:00pm           Bachata

The prices:

1 Workshop                  $15.00
2 Workshops                $25.00
3 Workshops                $35.00

To register for any of my workshops you can do so at www.juantato.com

Again, I wanted to thank you for joining my classes and allowing me to be a big part of your dancing life. I would love to see each and one of you on
Saturday October 30th at Frank Rey Dance Studio(3021 W. Water Ave. Tampa Fl 33614), but if I don't see you and you would like to keep up with me, please look me up on facebook at Juan TaTo Paredes.

Thank you and God bless

Good Italian restaurants in Fort Lauderdale

A good friend of mine from Fort Lauderdale recommended these good Italian restaurants:

There are tons of Italian restaurants in Fort Lauderdale but not that many that I would call good.

The ones I know I can trust to be great every time are:

Martorano's: East Oakland park Blvd, Super pricey and long wait. The place is more guido then Italian but the food is so darn great. It's also a place to see and be seen and is a local celebrity favorite. Must try's MEATBALLS, MUSSELS IF THEY HAVE THEM, EGGPLANT STACK, SHRIMP SCAMPI AND OF COURSE ANY OF THE PASTA DISHES!

Cafe de Angelo: Federal Hwy. Also authentic and delicious. Angelo is the owner and chef and the food is always prepared freshly with great ingredients. Although more low key then Martorano's the food is superb. I did have one unpleasant meal there. The osso buco but the Rigatoni alla Bolognese is WOW!

Cafe Vico: Owned by Brazilians that lived in Italy but we will give them a pass because they happen to make excellent risotto.

Gran Il Forno: On las Olas, This is the place for great espresso, wonderful homemade pastries and CIABATTA. It's just as good as any you'll find in Italy. In fact it may be better. They don't have it till 9am but it goes quick! This is a great spot to sit and have a coffee, read the paper and people watch.

Gasparilla Pirate Fest and Invasion in Tampa this weekend

The City of Tampa will hold its annual Gasparilla Festival this weekend. It is a mini mardi-gras, and founder’s day celebration all in one. This is a tradition in Tampa that dates back to 1904. The first invasion was actually done on horseback by "Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla". In 1911 the pirate invasion was done by ship for the first time, and has been done by ship ever since.

The roots of this festival dates back to the legendary Buccaneer Pirate named Jose Gaspar, who looted ships in the Gulf of Mexico in the late 1700’s through early 1800’s.

Originally, the parade was held on a Monday and many businesses in Tampa were closed that day. Starting 1988, the parade was moved to Saturday, and now it is the last Saturday in January. It is estimated that over 400K people attend the event every year.

Today the festival consists of a pirate invasion on a replica ship; a parade, and a fireworks show and live music.

Where does the Parade Start?
The annual parade will start at Bayshore and Bay-to-Bay Boulevard. It will continue north on Bay-toBay Boulevard into downtown and end on Ashley Street and Cass Drive

When:
This Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Gasparilla is a free event, but if you would like reserved seating, there is a charge.

Hidden Talents of Town n Country, this Saturday

Tampa, FL: Amidst all the negative news so far in 2010, the staff, board, volunteers and members of the Florida Institute for Community Studies (FICS) are pleased to invite the press and public to our latest effort: Winter Showcase. Youth have been busy in 2010 and it has paid off. This showcase gained its name, "The Hidden Talents of Town n Country," when the teachers and staff met and realized that many people do not realize what our youth have accomplished through hard work, teamwork and cooperation. The show will take place Saturday, January 23, 2010: Noon – 2 pm at the Town n Country Recreation Center, 6039 Hanley Road, Tampa FL 33634

This event and our various projects help us realize our Strategic Plan for Prevention in Town n Country by building on our community’s identified strengths! Please join us in meeting our mission of partnering with communities across Florida to help them achieve their goals through research, services, education and training. We are always looking for new partnerships.

Prodigy is sponsored by University Area Community Development Corporation, Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, Bay Area Youth Services and USF.

I am a Cuban Sandwich, movie, Gorilla Theatre, Tampa

The Gorilla Theatre presents "I am a Cuban Sandwich" by Richard DiPietra, Monday January 25th at 7pm.

I AM A CUBAN SANDWICH

Author Richard DiPietra takes you on a journey through the physical and cultural life of Ybor City. Not the Ybor of today with its bar scene and late night revels. This is what Ybor was, before time and Interstate 4 cut through the heart of a very special place.

DiPietra, a native of Tampa, has looked back and blended his true remembrances with touches of fiction, to created an honest and touching look into the human experience of growing up - especially growing up in a melting pot that simmers with the smell of Spanish Bean Soup and fresh baked Cuban Bread - the kind that has the palm frond in it.

These stories will remind you of what Tampa was and perhaps even what you were growing up.

Tickets: $5

Gorilla Pass Holders: FREE

Reservations are HIGHLY recommended.
